Description

This master programme prepares you to teach French language and literature to the higher classes of Dutch higher secondary and tertiary education (HAVO, VWO and HBO in Dutch). Instead of spending a great deal of time in class, you will be spending most of your time in front of it, teaching teens and young adults at the school where you work. The combination of one day a week at HU, and the rest of the week actually teaching makes for an ideal combination.

You are prepared to teach French language and literature to the higher classes of Dutch higher secondary and tertiary education (HAVO, VWO, and HBO). You can also develop into a department head or team leader. Furthermore, you have acquired a critical view of education and are full of ideas on how to improve it.

Requirement

To enter the programme you need to have:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Education in French, or

  • A Bachelor's degree in French Language and Culture combined with an Education Minor.

Additionally, you need proven English skills at CEFR level C1. Additionally, you need proven English skills at CEFR level C2.

Before your admission, you will have a personal interview with a student counsellor. Together, you will discuss what you want out of the programme, your motivation, ambitions and experience in order to design your personal Learning Plan. This will give you a good idea about the possibilities this master programme offers you, and whether it is a good fit.

Structure

The combination of practical lessons and academics when studying HU's Teacher Education in French Master programme prepares you to be well-equipped to teach French in the upper form of secondary education in the Netherlands. You will have studied didactics, teaching theory, and of course the French language. Moreover, there is enough flexibility for you to choose your own pace during the course.

Year 1 starts with courses on literature, linguistics, and didactics focused on deepening and broadening your knowledge but also improving your language skills. Courses like Literature 20th Century, Communication oral, Didactics 1, and Linguistique 1 will help you improve your knowledge of the French language, literature, culture, and didactics, bringing it to 'near native' level (CEFR level C1 +) by the time you graduate. Together with your fellow students, you reflect on your studies using learning questions and your Learning Plan.

In year 2 there is a strong emphasis on your oral French academic skills. You will increase your knowledge about French literature and linguistics as well as undertake a research project in the field of teaching methodology. An example of such a project is: "Student Motivation for Literature: A Thematic Approach to Teaching Literature to Upper-form Students with the Aim to Increase Student Motivation for Literature."

Throughout the Teacher Education in French Master programme you work and teach in the higher years of Dutch higher secondary and tertiary education (HAVO, VWO, and HBO in Dutch), learning as you go.
