Description

The part-time Teacher Education in English is a four-year programme in an international setting, that has been taught in the English language since 2015. The programme is designed so that you can combine it with your current career, whether that is already within education or in a completely different field. From the first year on, you will have an internship at a Dutch school where you will be functioning as a teacher, depending on your experience. Students who already have a teaching job will use their job as their internship.

With your Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) degree, you can work in secondary education, teaching the lower years, and at vocational and language schools. You can also become a freelancer and teach/tutor privately, write course books or exam materials or work in teacher training.

Requirement

To enter the programme you of course need a good command of English, as well as the relevant secondary or tertiary education. Our programme selection check is a mandatory part of your enrolment.

The Admission Office needs a copy of your diploma and transcript for the official diploma evaluation. You have to pass an English language test and an interview may be part of your admission procedure.

The minimum admission requirements for entrance are:

A (senior) secondary school diploma

  • International Baccalaureate or European Baccalaureate Diploma
  • China: senior middle school diploma
  • Germany: Abitur (Zeugnis der Allgemeine Hochschulreife) or Fachhochschulreife
  • UK: 6 subjects with a minimum of 4 GCSEs/IGCSEs with A, B or C grade AND 2 A/AS levels
  • France: Baccalaureate
  • Switzerland: Maturitatszeugnis
  • Italy: Diploma di Maturità
  • USA: high school diploma with college preparatory programme
  • General: a Matriculation Certificate

All students, except students with a relevant Dutch diploma, must prove that they have good writing and conversation skills in English. If English is not your native language, you must provide a result from an internationally recognised test of English

Structure

Our Teacher Education in English covers five disciplines:

  • The English language: Literature, grammar, linguistics and the English-speaking world
  • Methodology: acquiring a second language
  • Research: practice-based research at a school
  • Profession: pedagogics, child development, development psychology
  • Internship/work placement

You will spend ten weeks abroad in an English-speaking country to immerse yourself in the language and culture, and to work on your fluency.

During the final phase, you teach (almost) completely independently. Half of your time is devoted to your work placement at a school, having regular teaching duties three days a week, combined with working on a research project for the school. The other half consists of optional subjects, study-work supervision, weekly meetings reflecting on classroom sessions and your experiences at the internship school, as well as preparing for your final assessment.
