Description

Civil engineers plan, design, build and maintain infrastructure such as roads, bridges, buildings, water and wastewater treatment facilities and dams. A civil engineer applies cutting edge technologies to protect the environment and improve the quality of human life.

Many undergraduate courses in civil engineering have laboratory components. These labs provide hands-on experience for our students and take place in specialized laboratories, including:

engineering mechanics laboratory,

structural and materials testing laboratories,

hydraulics laboratory,

geotechnical laboratory,

environmental engineering laboratory,

computer Laboratory

The University of Manitoba's Civil Engineering program is the oldest engineering program in Western Canada. Our undergraduate program is fully accredited - all our graduates are eligible to become professional engineers in Canada. A co-operative education option allows students to include practical work experience in their education before graduating.

Graduates of the civil engineering program are academically qualified to register as Engineers-in-Training in engineering licensing bodies in Canada. The civil engineering program is designed to give students a broad knowledge of engineering principles and professional practice.

The program has a strong core component that provides exposure to a range of areas in civil engineering, including – but not limited to – the design of buildings and bridges; the design of facilities and methods for treatment of water, waste water and solid waste; the design of foundations, earthworks and river bank protection; transportation planning; the design of roads and pavement; the design of hydraulic structures such as sewers, canals, and spillways; and the management of surface and ground water.

In the last years of the program, there are many opportunities for specialization through selection of technical elective courses, including an environmental option.
