Description

The University of Central Lancashire (abbreviated UCLan) is a public university based in the city of Preston, Lancashire, England. It has its roots in The Institution For The Diffusion Of Useful Knowledge, founded in 1828. Previously known as Harris Art College, Preston Polytechnic and Lancashire Polytechnic, in 1992 it was granted university status by the Privy Council. The university is the 19th largest in the UK in terms of student numbers.


The university has students and researchers from over 100 countries and partnerships with 125 international institutions. It has a base in China's Shenzhen Virtual University Park, conducting collaborative research with some of China's leading universities into nanotechnology with applications in drug delivery, water purification and fire toxicity.


Within the School of Language and Global Studies, staff speak 30 languages and represent 22 nationalities.


UCLan has 98 professors, over 600 research or knowledge transfer-active members of staff, and 763 research students. There are 246 Honorary Fellows of the university.

Frequently asked questions

Tuition fee payments and costs remain the same. At enrolment you must make a further payment towards your total tuition fees. We advise that you pay in full and receive a discount of £300. If you wish to pay by instalments you will need to make a payment at enrolment which takes your total payment to 50% of your first year tuition fees (with one further instalment in April) you will need to pay a further £150 for this arrangement. Whatever you decide, you will need to make this commitment during the enrolment process.

We provide a wide range of student accommodation. When you live in our halls of residence you’ll benefit from a convenient location, modern self-catered facilities, inclusive bills, support from our on-site teams, and a 24-hour security presence. All our accommodation is situated within a short walking distance of our campuses.

The majority of teaching will be face-to-face, in person on campus (not including online learning courses), and students will have full access to all of our campus facilities.

Normally course enrolment opens six weeks prior to your course start date. This is an online process and Admissions will send out instructions alongside induction material for your course. After enrolling online you will be able to access all university services and online resources. During this time you can also order your UCLan Student Card allowing you full access to all of our excellent facilities, including the Library and Sir Tom Finney Sports Centre.
