Description
The basic aim of the Degree Course in English Studies is to produce professionals with a high level of expression and comprehension in English and a comprehensive awareness of the linguistic, historical, cultural and literary realities of English-speaking countries. Accordingly, the course concentrates on the acquisition of English and a second foreign language, methods of textual and contextual analysis, the history of the English language, literature and criticism, the description and analysis of the phonological, lexical, morphological and syntactical, semantic and pragmatic-discursive aspects of the English language and understanding the social, historical, political, philosophical, geographical and artistic contexts of the Anglo-Saxon world, all within the context of democratic values of individual freedom, gender equality and the culture of peace.

All applicants for undergraduate degree courses must possess a minimum qualification of five (5) credits, in the Senior Secondary School Certificate (WAEC, NECO, SAT, KCSE, ZIMSEC, GCE).
In order to be admitted to these studies, new students must have a basic humanistic background, as well as a good disposition towards English linguistics, literature and culture, and for logical and critical reasoning. Prior knowledge of the English language equivalent to at least level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is essential.
