Description

The University of Alicante was created in October 1979 on the structure of the University Study Center (CEU), which was started in 1968. Thus, Alicante recovered in this way its university studies center that was suspended in 1834.

The University of Alicante offers courses in more than fifty degrees. It comprises over seventy departments and research groups in areas of Social Science and Law, Experimental science, Technology, Liberal Arts, Education and Health Sciences, and five research institutes. Almost all classes are taught in Spanish language, some are in English, in particular, in computer science and in business degrees, and a few are in Valencian language. Spanish language courses are offered for foreign students throughout the year and during the summer. The university offers English Language versions to PhD level including religion. Julian Havell was the first to graduate from this scheme.

The Department of Economics runs, in Europe, a well-known Graduate Program in Economics which is an American-style full-time program taught entirely in English. The program provides students with a thorough theoretical and practical training in microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics, as well as specialization in applied fields. The aim of the program is to prepare students for professional careers in universities, public and private research organizations, international institutions, consultancy and business.

The University of Alicante has a long history of delivering teaching, research and knowledge transfer services. It will be an honor for me to represent him like a President. Daunting challenges lie ahead: first, to consolidate what has been achieved since the University was created; second, to advance towards a 21st century university that prioritizes digital transformation, the transition to a green economy, equal opportunities and further education and research when designing policies, both generally and at university level.

The University of Alicante has always set a leading example in terms of outreach, culture, internationalization and development for the whole area. It will not be long before we pass on the baton to a new generation – a generation that should be committed to retaining and attracting talent, the main driver of high-quality teaching and research excellence. Knowledge transfer should also lead us towards a more sustainable, fairer economic system.

Frequently asked questions

Places at public universities are allocated following objective criteria corresponding to the marks achieved in entrance examinations and the assessment of their academic records. Public universities shall not leave vacancies as long as there are applicants for the places they offer. For students coming after successfully passing entrance examinations, the first criterium will be the admission mark, giving preference to the students who passed the exams in the first call (June). There is no pre-established admission mark. The admission mark is provided by the last student on the list of admitted applicants after the pre-registration process.

Application for university places is made through the UNIVERSITY PRE-REGISTRATION SYSTEM There is a single pre-registration system for all public universities in the region of Valencia. Students can applied for up to a maximum of 20 undergraduate courses by order of preference. Instructions and places available at the Valencia region The period for the submission of applications for the pre-registration SINGLE PHASE opens from the beginning of June to to mid July. Pre-registration application is made on-line.

The cost of enrolment for official studies (bachelor's or master's degrees) is limited by public prices. The annual amount of tuition fees is set by the Generalitat Valenciana in accordance with the maximum and minimum increase limits determined by the Ministry of Universities. For undergraduate degrees, the price per academic credit in first enrolment varies from 12,79 € to 18 € depending on the level of experimentality of the studies. Assuming that a student passes all subjects at first enrolment, an undergraduate degree in the humanities would cost approximately €3,206 and a degree in the health field would cost approximately €4,457. Students who obtain scholarships do not pay tuition fees. Members of large families or students with disabilities can have deductions from 50 % to 100 %. Students who obtain "honours" grades receive a discount on the following year's tuition fees. The second, third and fourth registration fees will have surcharges of 100 %, 323 % and 465 % respectively compared to the first registration fee. The system of payment of the enrolment fee for official studies at the University of Alicante will be made in 8 instalments by direct debit. It will be possible, however, that the student can choose to pay the totality of the enrolment fees in a single receipt. For doctoral studies and UB-specific courses, other methods of payment may be established, as well as a different number of instalments. Direct debit can be made to any bank in the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA). Failure to pay any of the instalments will result in the cancellation of the enrolment, without the right to reimbursement of the amounts that have been paid. Students applying for grants from the Ministry of Education defer payment of the enrolment fee until the resolution of their grant application. In mid-September, these students pay an administrative fee (approximately €70 for new students, approximately €10 for other students). Once the scholarship application has been resolved, if it is favourable to the student, they will be exempt from payment; if it is unfavourable, a receipt will be sent to them for the amount of the academic fees. Students applying for scholarships, but who do not meet the academic requirements demanded in the calls for applications, will make a precautionary payment of the academic fees. The issuance of payment receipts is announced via SMS and can be accessed through the UACloud, app "Payment of Receipts".
