About the Department

No specific prior training is required of students, however, it is recommended that the student's training be of a Scientific-Technological or Health Sciences profile. In addition, it would be desirable for the future student of the Degree in Biotechnology to have the following personal and academic characteristics:

Objectives

The interdisciplinary and integrating nature of knowledge, coming from engineering and modern molecular, cellular and functional biology techniques, make Biotechnology one of the most fascinating and attractive disciplines from an educational point of view. The Degree in Biotechnology from UCAM aims to train professionals who are capable of researching, innovating, developing, and improving biotechnological processes, tools, and materials in the areas of health, food, agriculture, livestock and aquaculture, environment, and industry.

In addition, following the recommendation of professionals from biotechnological companies consulted, more weight is given to subjects that allow students to delve into the world of biotechnological companies in its different aspects: legal, organizational, economic-financial, productive and market, as well as in legal aspects that may affect the exercise of their profession, contents that have been lacking in other Degrees in Biotechnology offered by Spanish Universities.

Career Opportunities

The graduate in Biotechnology is a specialist in applications of biology, who delves into the specific techniques and approaches of contemporary biotechnology, process engineering, and their economic, social, and legal aspects. 

The professional fields in which a graduate in Biotechnology can work include the health, pharmaceutical, agricultural, agri-food, forestry, environmental, and chemical industries, as well as research in universities and public and private research centers, hospitals, and in companies. Also, with the necessary complementary training, a graduate in Biotechnology can dedicate himself to university teaching, as well as to secondary education and professional training.

Internship

As for the external practices, being aware of the high practical load of the Degree in Biotechnology by the UCAM, they are included within the optionality of the degree, to be taken in the last year.
