Description

The MA in English program focuses primarily on English literature. Students will explore a wide range of periods, genres and critical approaches and will have the option either to undertake a scholarly or creative writing thesis or to complete a coursework MA.

Our department offers programs covering a wide range of periods, genres, media and theoretical approaches.

One of the major strengths of the faculty is its commitment to teaching excellence, with three of its members having been honoured with the university’s highest teaching award, and several others having been honoured with Merit Awards, Graduate Teaching Awards and UMSU Certificates of Teaching Excellence.

Our department offers coursework and supervision in a wide range of topics, including:

Literature and criticism

By period (medieval, early modern, restoration and 18th century, romantic, 19th century, modern, 20th century and contemporary literature)

By location (British, American, Canadian, post-colonial and world literatures)

By approach (critical theory, bibliography and book history)

Film (world film, American and Canadian film, and film theory)

Theatre (Canadian, Irish and British theatre)

Creative writing

Poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, science fiction and fantasy, and comics

Playwriting and screenwriting

Requirement

A copy of your High School Diploma (O LEVEL & A LEVEL) e.g (WAEC, NECO, SAT, KCSE, ZIMSEC, GCE)

A copy of your International passport Bio-data page.

A copy of your recent Passport Photo.

A valid copy of your Result Checker Card.

All applicants for undergraduate degree courses must possess a minimum qualification of five (5) credits, in the Senior Secondary School Certificate (WAEC, NECO, SAT, KCSE, ZIMSEC, GCE).

To be considered for admission to the English (MA) program, you must have a minimum of a four-year honours degree in English literature (or equivalent) with a minimum GPA of 3.0 in prior English studies and an overall GPA of 3.0.
