This program in Languages, Literatures and Cultures (Non-Thesis) at the University of Calgary offers three streams - applied linguistics, literature and/or film studies, and transcultural studies. Requirement

  1. A minimum of 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 point system, over the past two years of full-time study (a minimum of 10 full-course equivalents or 60 units) of the undergraduate degree.
  2. A four-year baccalaureate degree, or equivalent from a recognized institution.
  3. A current résumé.
  4. A statement outlining the applicant's interests and reasons for wishing to pursue graduate work in this department. Clearly identify your thesis research area.
  5. Applicants may be interviewed by a member of the Admissions Committee as part of the application screening process.
  6. Applicants should have the equivalent of two years worth of appropriate work experience.
  7. Two reference letters.
  8. English language proficiency (Optional): An applicant may fulfill the English language proficiency requirement with a TOEFL score of 97 (Internet-based) or an IELTS score of 7.0 or higher with a minimum score of 6.0 in each section (Academic version).

Structure

Core courses: Students will take a required course on Additional Language Pedagogy, and a research methods course on Applied Linguistics or Literary and Cultural Studies.
Capstone essay and exam: Students complete a written essay of approximately 20 pages to form the basis of the Capstone Examination.
